About

Hello Blog-o-verse!!  This blog was originally designed as a place for me to post my reactions and responses to the reading and learning in my "Content Area Reading" class. However, I have transformed the purpose a bit.

Now, this blog will be a literacy resource for teachers, parents, students, and anyone else who reads it. The newly designed blog will focus on:
* Adolescent literature
* Adolescent literacy
* Motivation for struggling or disinterested readers
* Nonfiction reading strategies
* Nonfiction comprehension strategies
* Fifth grade specific activities from my classroom
I'll also be including posts with resources I find that could help in terms of literacy in general.

So...who am I to create a literacy resource?
Let me answer that with a little background information... about me is necessary.   I am a fifth grade teacher in Indiana. I have a Masters in Education with a focus in reading and a Reading Specialist license.  From January through March, I coach middle school swimming.  I am very involved with the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution program, which was developed by the Center for Civic Education.  The program teaches elementary and secondary students about our American constitutional democracy and promotes civic understanding and participation.  While working with this program, I've worked with students in grades 5 - 12, and with teachers and scholars from across the country.  As a part of this program, students read and study our country's founding documents and several other nonfiction texts - which is difficult for many of them, even the good readers!  This experience has strengthened my interest in the teaching of nonfiction reading strategies (in all of the content areas, not just civics).
